Last eve, New York & Company celebrated the launch of their Soho Jeans Collection campaign with the line’s new face, Jennifer Hudson. The singer and actress, along with Spike Lee, Danielle BrooksJune Ambrose and a bevy of bloggers, came out for a karaoke night celebration. Think a mix of TLC, the Spice Girls, NSYNC and Prince, to name a few. We caught up with Hudson to chat about all things New York and denim.

Did you ever imagine you’d be the face of a denim line?
No! But it’s perfect because I grew up with the problem of not being able to find jeans that fit correctly. I was a tall 12 or 13 year old, and finding the right jeans to meet my height and waistline was pretty impossible. I used to complain that they need to make jeans that fit every girl, no matter what size, and this collection fits like that.
How many pairs of jeans do you own?

Girl…it’s bad. Even more now since I got these jeans. I have at least 400 pairs.
Seriously?
Yeah, but there’s only so many I wear. I own tons of them, but it takes a lot for me to find that comfortable pair, so I really wear about five of them. And one of the five are what I’m wearing.
How does it feel to be making your Broadway debut in the fall in The Color Purple?

I’m nervous and excited at the same time! I just finalized my New York home. I’m ready for the stage.
What’s your favorite thing to do in New York?

People watching. I love it. My favorite thing about New York is the diversity and how everyone is their own individual with their own style and flavor. I’m looking forward to adding to my flavor.
Have you gone on any vacations this summer?

My work kind of feels like a vacation. I literally just came straight here from Jamaica, and we were island hopping along the way. I don’t vacation much, but I try to weave it in with my work. And home is always a vacation for me–it was Chicago, but now it’s going to be New York!
