One of the complaints about men’s shows is that they feel like a lot of the same, over and over, but La Perla is doing their part to keep things interesting. Last week at Pitti Uomo in Florence, Italy, the brand launched a new concept of lounge wear and beachwear for the boys at a runway show to show their Spring 2015 collection. Needless to say, the looks captivated editors and buyers. Word is, creative director Emiliano Rinaldi chose fabrics and details typically taken from the world of feminine lingerie and gave them a new spin for guys, inspired by the submarine world. In the show notes on our seats, we learned that “the symbol of the mood is an evocative and surreal print of a flying oyster protecting a pearl that has been transformed into a mysterious eye.” Rinaldi broke it down further: “For me, the oyster is a symbol of something that creates emotion, and at the same time knows how to protect it. I don’t think there could ever have been a more appropriate name for the company, given what it has created over history. The eye is the element every human uses most to express itself. But all of this wasn’t enough, so I added a pair of wings. Because it’s important to always fly beyond your limits.”
