10 Things You Don’t Know About…Who What Wear’s Bobby Schuessler

by Sydney Sadick

Two and a half years ago, Bobby Schuessler bid adieu to NYC and moved to LA, where he became the editorial director of Who What Wear. How did he land in the media world, and what food does he absolutely despise? Find out in the latest installment of “10 Things.”

  1. My first job in NYC was at a fashion PR agency: I lasted two months—magazines were my true passion.
  2. I was Who What Wear’s first male fashion editor: I may have a beard and a voice that’s five octaves deeper than any of my team members’, but I live for women’s fashion—always have. And yes, I’ve even tried to wear heels.
  3. I wear black every single day: And I pretty much have for the last eight years—yes, even in sunny Los Angeles. My uniform is a black tee from Alexander Wang, black jeans from Acne Studios, and boots and a leather jacket from The Kooples.
  4. I listen to Whitney Houston on every flight: I travel often but get terrified by turbulence. To cope, I listen to Whitney Houston’s “I Will Always Love You” on repeat. It’s the only thing that calms me down—that and red wine.
  5. One of the first celebrities I interviewed was Julie Andrews: I was an assistant at Lucky at that time, covering a Target event she attended. I think I blacked out during the entire process because my 5-year-old self was basically screaming inside. Icon.
  6. In high school, I worked at a snack bar at a country club: I got in trouble often because I’d sit behind the counter and read fashion magazines or watch Friends—rather than restock the freezer with ice cream treats.
  7. I despise sliced tomatoes: I love ketchup, tomato sauce, and cut tomatoes in pasta, but bring me a sliced tomato on a sandwich and I’ll give it right back.
  8.  I believe in being nice to everyone: The industry is incredibly tiny, and you never know when someone is going to come back around. When individuals who were mean to me back in the day resurface, I can’t help but laugh a little—but I always respond and am polite.
  9. The Wizard of Oz is my favorite movie: I first discovered the masterpiece when I was 3 years old. I became obsessed—started an Oz collection (complete with a Christmas tree dedicated to the film), attended Oz festivals, and so on. What can I say? I just can’t resist a sparkly heel.
  10. I don’t drive: I moved to Los Angeles two and a half years ago and still don’t have a car. I pretend I’m still a New Yorker and walk everywhere (yes, even to work) and rely on Lyft. I think I’m the only person who actually walks in this city.
