Viktor & Rolf Couture Fall 2014

Viktor & Rolf

There was a singular theme for Viktor & Rolf’s Fall showing: red. So yes, the set, the runway, the clothes, and the accessories were all in coordinating hues of red. But the meaning behind the show was much deeper than just a color obsession. After all, this is Viktor Horsting and Rolf Snoeren we’re talking about. Rather, the designer duo decided to hone in on a “contemporary obsession,” which led them directly to the red carpet. They took an actual tapis rouge and created couture-worthy gowns (and coordinating brogues) out of it. Some seemed reminiscent of towels, tucked simply around the body, while others were much more intricate, featuring gargantuan bows, heavy pleating, and plunging necklines. Yet the construction was, in fact, playful and pointedly light. After all, anything of carpet-like construction wouldn’t necessarily bode well at a screening in L.A.’s hot temps, so the lighter gowns and separates decorated with leopard spots and zebra stripes seem more red carpet-bound. The collection also featured rouge baubles, which are part of an ongoing partnership between Viktor & Rolf and Atelier Swarovski. Titled Red Velvet, the pieces featured crystals artfully embedded in velvet. Life through Viktor & Rolf’s red glasses isn’t bad looking, at all…
