Valentino Couture Spring 2015

There’s something about Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pierpaolo Piccioli‘s clothes for Valentino that make us want to run through some ancient romantic castle and pretend we’re in a fairy tale. As it turns out, that romantic notion was exactly what they were going for, quite literally, with poetry sewn onto some of the gowns. They took cues from Shakespeare and Chagall, the latter’s Russian roots inspired many of the garments like intricately embroidered pinafores over smoked shirts or shearling vests worn over long dresses. Russian red was prevalent throughout the show, and the color was particularly stunning in a solid deep-v velvet gown or a fully lace tiered gown with a matching capelet.

While there’s no doubt that the duo excels at embroidery, some of the simplest looks, like a medieval-style oatmeal gown worn on model Madison Stubbington or a velvet teal sleeveless gown on Irina Kravchenko, had equal appeal. The latter part of the show included wispy romantic gowns with bursting stars, rainbows, and clouds. These were meant, in pretty simplistic fashion, to signify what it feels like when one has fallen in love. But how can you not fall in love each season with the rich, intricate, and romantic work chez Valentino?
