Tim Coppens Spring 2015

by Dena Silver

Public School isn’t the only menswear designer edging into the womenswear market. Tim Coppens offered up an expanded selection of pieces for the cool girls alongside his usual spate of looks for hommes. And the result was a smash hit. So much so that we overheard the Barneys team discussing how large of an order they were planning on placing. But what was so good about the collection? For the ladies, the designs were simply understated, but it was borrowed from the boys, and so much cooler. As in, even a blue anorak dress translated into a chic piece. There were also bomber jackets paired with teeny shorts and a few variations on graphic sweatshirts to obsess over. Meanwhile, the men’s threads were heavily print-centric, with electric blue and orange dashes striping through black shorts and jackets. Alongside streetwear favorites, like more sweatshirts and zippered coats with dangling details, Coppens tried his hand at suiting. Particularly successful was a navy collarless suit, which perfectly married those streetwear details with ribbing and seam details. So what does the future look like for Coppens? “One day we will do two shows, one for women and one for men,” he told us backstage. “But not too soon, we’re still a small company!” So there’s plenty to look forward to.
