Last night at the Brooklyn Museum‘s Artists Ball, Amirah Kassem, the It girl/model/founder of Flour Shop, turned her over-the-top baking and confectionary skills into art. Kassem used over 10,000 gumballs (I chewed dozens of the leftovers) into an edible Takashi Murakami-inspired smiley face sunflower wall sculpture. Yummers! It became an instant Instagram smash, with guests dressed in outrageous costumes (a dead Bollywood dancer…a human marshmallow) snapping endless photos with Kassem (who wore a white Honor candy dot dress) and her art. It took Kassem 15 hours with a glue gun and gum balls to complete the piece. “Murakami’s art represents so many of my favorite things,” Amirah told me. “Rainbows, smiley faces and flowers! So what better way to honor him than to turn it into something sweet?”
