Soludos Founder Nick Brown On The Brand’s Surf Lodge Pop-Up Shop

Got summer kicks on your mind? So does Nick Brown, founder of Soludos, the footwear label that pushes espadrilles aplenty. But these aren’t your average slip-ons: see the platform or sandal-esque variations for proof. Not to mention, collabs with the likes of Aussie label We Are Handsome and illustrator Jason Polan should further the point. And this summer, Brown is taking his chaussures to Montauk’s hautest spot, the Surf Lodge. We’ll let Brown fill you in…

Why did you choose to set up shop at the Surf Lodge?
I showed up on the doorstep of Surf Lodge four years ago with a few pairs in hand; since then we’ve all become great friends with the staff. They were actually one of the first places to carry our shoes. The laid-back, sun-bleached aesthetic is also a perfect match for our summer lifestyle.

What ‘s the pop-up shop’s vibe like?
Our shop is on the beach next to their outdoor fire pit, right on the beach. The aesthetic is inspired by fruit stands that you find in the markets of Mediterranean. We’re going to be doing a lot of fun events throughout the summer; there will be a special Soludos menu for the beach area, Soludos-sponsored paddleboard races across the pond, and bi-weekly sunset DJ sessions. We’re also partnering with Heartbeet Juicery to offer a special fresh juice to have before the drinks start flowing, or the morning after.

What’s your first memory from the Surf Lodge?
Like most first timers at Surf Lodge, my first memory there was a sunset concert that grew into a late night disco party. To be honest, the night is still a bit hazy because it was drenched with a few too many Dark & Stormies!

What’s the best band you’ve seen at one of their Sunset Concerts?
I remember catching The Drums kicking off summer a few years back. It was such a great set and night. Their track “I Want To Go Surfing” may as well be the theme song to the place!

What are your other go-to Montauk hangouts?
Dinner at The Crow’s Nest is always an amazing experience; it has such a cozy and genuine aura.

Any upcoming collabs in the works?
We’re working with illustrator Jason Polan on our next collaboration. He was named one of New York’s most interesting people and is creating some very tongue-in-cheek designs that are unlike anything we’ve ever done.

Where will you be spending your summer?
I’ll be out in the dunes in Amangansett, hopefully somewhere between a barbecue and the pool the entire time!

Which Soludos style will you be wearing from Memorial Day to Labor Day?
Our new smoking slipper shape, which just launched, puts an understated yet sophisticated spin on our shoes. They’re really comfortable and work with everything from a summer suit to board shorts
