Shoe Tales! With Jane Weitzman

by The Daily Front Row

Stuart Weitzman’s wife, Jane Weitzman, is as obsessed with heels as the rest of us. The result is a  new coffee-table tome, Art & Sole, due out August 20. She gave us the full walk-through…

What’s the book about?
It’s a collection of the shoes by different artists that were in our Madison Avenue windows over the years. None of them are wearable! One shoe was even made out of bread! I’ve been thinking about doing the book for years. After we sold the company—I retired December 31—it was the perfect time to do the book.

Any pioneering firsts from Weitzman’s windows?
I did a breast cancer-themed window in October 1996. No one had done something like that before. I received a beautiful letter from Evelyn Lauder telling me how much she liked the windows. She asked me to get other Madison Avenue stores involved. We’ve done windows for breast cancer since. One year, we did carved pink pumpkins!

Part of the proceeds go to charity, right?
Any royalties I make will go to charity. All proceeds from the book’s September sales in the U.S. will go to ovarian cancer research, and proceeds from October sales will go to breast cancer research.

How’s retirement treating you?
Well, this is my new job! I’m on the phone all the time scheduling events around the country.
