Sergio Says! Musings From Cosmo (And Beyond…)

How is Sergio Kletnoy‘s June going so far? Well, this week was a bit emotional, including a tear-jerking Cinema Society screening and a killer Sia performance. On the food front, there was a glorious Italian feast to be gobbled up. Mangia! Read on for all the details…

It was another jam-packed, fun filled, barely-time-to-sleep week, because downtime in Sergio-land just doesn’t exist. My workload was extra heavy as Cosmo hosted its second Fashion Career Summit with the CFDA. The event was held at the Hearst Theatre and was completely sold out! It gave inspiring fashionistas the opportunity to hear from and mingle with Steven Kolb, Rebecca Minkoff, WSJ style reporter Elizabeth Holmes, Man Repeller’s Leandra Medine and JoCo, of course. I also had to finalize THE BOSS’ trip to Cannes for the 2014 Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity. Joanna’s week-long schedule is filled with fab events, grand dinners and very important meetings, as well as a Q&A panel with her BFF, Sarah Jessica Parker. Fingers crossed that next week I get to catch up while JC is conquering the French Riviera, but knowing this job, I probably won’t.

This week began with my first-ever visit to the set of Late Night With Seth Myers. My friend Jeremiah is the music booker for the show and when I found out that Sia was the musical guest, I dropped everything I was doing and rushed to 30 Rockefeller Plaza for a rare public appearance from one of my favorite musicians. Yes, she’s a modern day poet and go-to songwriter for some of the biggest pop stars on the planet: Beyonce, Kylie, Shakira, J.Lo, Katy, Christina, Celine, Britney and Rihanna. But next month, Sia is also releasing her sixths album “1000 Forms of Fear”, a magical body of work filled with extraordinary songs. For her Late Night performance, Sia belted out “Chandelier”  on top of a bed, her face hidden from the audience, while her friend Lena Dunham (yes, THAT Lena Dunham!) performed a kooky and brilliant interpretive dance. It’s truly must-watch TV!

The next evening I got to relax, eat and be merry at a “21st” birthday party for my dear friend Melissa. Our gang, which was 25 deep, met up at celeb-favorite Emilio’s Ballato on the Lower East Side for some of the best old-school Italian food and wine. If you haven’t experienced Emilio’s, drop everything you’re doing and get a reservation pronto. You might come out of the restaurant with a few extra pounds under your belt but the food is delish and totally worth it!

I also interviewed one of Scotland’s best singer-songwriters, Paolo Nutini. His powerful voice will stir up feelings you didn’t know you had and unlock every emotion known to woman and man. When Adele saw the video for “Iron Sky” from Paolo’s new album, she immediately took to Twitter and said “F**k!!! This is one of the best things I’ve ever seen in my life hands down.” She didn’t exaggerate, it’s truly one of the most powerful and passionate performances I’ve ever seen. His sold out performance a few days later at Webster Hall was also amazing! Nutini’s 3rd album, Caustic Love, will be out in September.

My final stop of the week was Arc Entertainment and The Cinema Society’s screening of Andrew LevitasLullaby starring Garrett Hedlund, Richard Jenkins, Amy Adams, Anne Archer, Terrence Howard and Jennifer Hudson. This heart wrenching drama about “a son reconciling with his cancer-dying father who decided to take himself off life support in forty-eight hours’ time” made me weep five times in a little less than two hours. This wasn’t a tear or two; this was a grown man crying like a baby. Most of it had to do with my own experience, reminiscing about the last time I saw my granddad, only a few hours before he passed away from cancer. I guess Cinema Society’s founder Andrew Saffir is like a personal shrink and thanks to him I developed feelings and emotions I didn’t know existed. Lullaby was like a breakthrough during a therapy session. I left the theater at MoMA and rushed home for a marathon of Seinfeld…anything to keep my mind off that salty situation that took place only a few hours before.

I’ll be back next week, until then you can follow me on Twitter and Instagram at @SergioKletnoy for all things pop culture. Oh, and be sure to check out my fave new tunes below…
