Sarah Burton’s Fairy Tale for Alexander McQueen Spring 2016

by Paige Reddinger

Last night at Alexander McQueen guests filed into 145 rue de Malsherbes, in what we hear was reduced seating due to the venue this season, expecting to see something at once beautiful, sometimes dark, and a bit eccentric as we’ve come to expect from McQueen. It was, as always, a highly anticipated show with Anna Wintour arriving early to her front row throne and Salma Hayek and fashion titan husband, François Henri-Pinault arriving just before the show was to start.

But guests were in for a surprise this season. There were no elaborate masks or headpieces or anything dark, but it was otherworldly. The collection this season from Sarah Burton was straight out of a fairy tale. It was light, airy, and beautiful. Models wore light makeup with rosy cheeks and slightly messy braids. A soft blush pink shredded silk faille dress, a white deep-v dress with exaggerated sleeves, or a series of floral dresses with immaculate ruffled collars felt as though they belonged on a woman strolling through the mossy forest near her chateau.

To that note, however, the collection was thoroughly modern and very wearable. Some lacy dresses came paired with slouchy pants and sneakers and…there were even slashed denim jeans and body jewelry. If that sounds like a departure from the above, it all somehow melded beautifully together. This is for the modern princess after all. What’s more? Buyers were over the moon with the collection as were their VIP clients sitting with them in the front row.
