Rodarte Fall 2015

by Dena Silver

Upon entering Center548 for a Rodarte show, there’s a palpable sense of anticipation. The sets tend to evoke a mysterious and magical vibe, leaving the audience wondering what Laura and Kate Mulleavy have up their sleeves each season. This time around, it was a glorious mash-up of sumptuous furs, luscious leathers, a bit of cashmere, a healthy dose of lace, and a surprising amount of sparkle. Those leather leggings with panels of white lace were trumped by knockout pieces like a floral dress with an asymmetrical hem finished off with a touch of marabou. The outerwear commanded plenty of attention, too, including a plaid anorak with a hood lined in bold blue fur. The finale of the show included nine looks, and it felt decidedly Vegas showgirl-esque. In other words, this meant bright stripes of sequins, over-the-top Swarovski-embellished tulle, and ostrich feather detailing. In the hands of other designers, this mishmash could translate as gaudy and tasteless, but with Rodarte’s strange spin and off-kilter styling, the lineup veered back into It girl territory, right where it belongs.
