Rochas Spring 2016

by Ashley Baker

She was known as “Gala”—an art dealer, model, and muse to many who was best known for her long and famously dramatic marriage to Salvador Dali. Although Gala Dali (b. Elena Ivanovna Diakonova in Russia in 1894) died in 1982, she’s having another moment courtesy of Alessandro Dell’Acqua, who used her as inspiration for Rochas’ Spring 2016 collection. Surrealist motifs abound—blown-out jacquards, tapestries, funky little giraffes. But so do a lot of eminently wearable pieces, like lace-trimmed blouses, patent short-sleeved jackets, and ultra-easy eveningwear. Especially plum: taffeta cocktail frocks with massive off-kilter bows. In short, call up your best contact at Karla Otto and beg to put in your P.O., because for die-hard fashionettes who relish nostalgia, modernity, and eccentricity in equal parts, Dell’Acqua’s stuff is required wearing.
