NYFW Spring 2014: Prabal Gurung, Ruffian, Kenneth Cole, Rebecca Taylor

(NEW YORK) Prabal Gurung
With his Spring ’14 showing, Gurung proved once again that all eyes are on him for good reason. The designer showed his colorful Spring collection at Moynihan Station and turned to Bert Stern’s last sitting with Marilyn Monroe as his inspiration. Spring will look as spring should, with an emphasis on pastels in pink and mint. Standouts included a vermillion graphic rose digital printed rayon muscle tee and a vermillion technical tweed pencil skirt with disintegrated rose motif, and white and pink poplin shirt with foldover detail and cutout back and pearlescent pink, black and white abstract rose printed Napa leather pencil skirt. Staying feminine, modern, and colorful, Gurung has another winner on his hands that we’re sure Ms. Monroe would have approved herself. Some like it haute.

Ruffian
Always determined to give their customers and show guests a little education, Ruffian’s Brian Wolk and Claude Morais turned to a novel for their winning Spring collection’s “Ingénue” inspiration. “We were inspired by this novel called Bonjour Tristesse by Françoise Quoirez,” Wolk told us backstage before the show. “She’s one of our favorite novelists and wrote the book when she was 17 and became an international bestseller. The story is about this father and daughter relationship. They’re English and spend the summer in the South of France. They’re complicit and naughty. It’s an interesting dynamic.” The fast paced show was filled with plenty of pant suits, floral prints, and colors ranging from ocean blue to melon. An ingénue or woman of every age could find something from this sexy, original, and detailed collection. Did we mention the mods wore flats on the runway? Now, that’s a fresh conceit!

Kenneth Cole
Earlier this year, Kenneth Cole returned to NYFW after a brief hiatus, and we’re certainly glad he’s back. At a lively presentation on Saturday at The Garage, right next to KC HQ that brought out the likes of Mario Cantone, Cheyenne Jackson, and Carine Roitfeld, Cole turned to modern technology as the starting point for his men’s and women’s looks. “Your point of view depends on your points of view” the label explained in the notes. Highlights of grasshopper, green, and coral mingled together, against a backdrop of signature black and white, in the sporty and modern collection. Cole takes us into the future!

Rebecca Taylor
Taylor knows exactly what her girl wants, and for Spring, she delivered it once again with success. Just look at her enthusiastic crowd at Saturday’s runway show in Chelsea as living proof. This season she kept it feminime (know what works!) and modern with a tomboy edge. If you’re already a Taylor devotee you won’t be let down, but we also wouldn’t be surprised if she picked up some new fans with this Spring.
