NYFW Fall 2014: Michael Kors, Oscar de la Renta, Marc by Marc Jacobs, Wes Gordon, Bibhu Mohapatra

(NEW YORK) Michael Kors
Easy American sportswear is what made Michael Kors his billion-dollar fortune and it’s simple to see why in this collection.  Kors take on the pervasive casual undercurrent on the runways was a cohesive mix of muted tones like heather greys, camels, and creams on knits, oversize coats, and slouchy pants accented with the occasional low slung belt.  Luxurious furs were thrown over denim skirts and pants to exude the overall message of effortless style.

Oscar de la Renta
It was par for the course chez Oscar, as an array of ultra-luxe looks sashayed down the runway, which didn’t play to a theme, but did play to his clientele. There were pieces like a pintstripe suit jacket dress or a grey pinstripe pantsuit topped off with a mink fur for the high-powered executive. And of course, there were plenty of Oscar’s gorgeous gowns like a ruffle tiered polka dot strapless number that stunned on Karlie Kloss.

Marc by Marc Jacobs
Fashion’s fiercest warriors. We’ve seen some tough girl looks on the runway, but Katie Hillier and Luella Bartley’s version for MBMJ (as the line is now referred) was by far the coolest. Girls in moto-cross prints designed by Brit illustrator Fergus Percell marched out with hard faces, some of which were covered by kerchiefs. Evening looks came as puffy tulle skirts paired with leather jackets. There was something Harajuku about it and its street vibe reminded us why we fell in love with this brand in the first place.

Wes Gordon
Ice queen. Minty blue was the stunning hue that ran throughout Gordon’s collection this season. And while his girl has always been a bit icy, this season she loosened up in easy slip dresses and slouchy suits chicly topped off with to-die-for outerwear. Its casual elegance will have his clientele clamoring for more.

Bibhu Mohapatra
Mohapatra stuck to his uptown ladylike fare of mostly evening wear looks for the gala-vanting ladies who lunch set. But he added just a dash of edge in graphic lines on silk shift dresses, skirts, and jackets. Plus, bold colors like an orange red that added fire to a sexy slit gown or a long mink lined croc jacket veered ever so slightly into cool territory.
