Misha Nonoo and Swarovski Collective Get Red Hooked

by Eddie Roche

It’s not every designer who can get editors, socials, and models to trek to Red Hook, Brooklyn on a Tuesday night, but who can resist an invite from Misha Nonoo? Last night, she hosted a dinner with Swarovski Collective to celebrate her collaboration with artist Dustin Yellin on her upcoming Spring 2015 collection, which will be available in January. “We met three and a half years ago in Aspen at ArtCrush,” Nonoo told us last night. “I was blown about by the dimensionality of his work. I got to know him and fell in love with him as a human. I came to [his workspace] Pioneer Works and I saw the scale of his space and his works. I really felt there was a translation that could happen very seamlessly, no pun intended, into fashion and clothing.”

Several pieces included Swarovksi crystals, as part of the longtime Swarovski Collective, which first collaborated with Alexander McQueen and Isabella Blow in 1999 and has since worked with Altuzarra, Proenza Schouler, Erdem, and Christopher Kane, to name a few. Last night’s event in Yellin’s vast and impressive work space (“It’s a little messy sometimes when I come here! It definitely belongs to a boy!” Nonoo joked) welcomed Doutzen Kroes, Lindsay Ellingson, Edita Vilkeviciute, Eric Wilson, Amy Fine Collins, Constance Jablonski, Princess Eugenie of York, Ryan Brown, Karla Martinez de Salas, and Nonoo’s charming hubbie Alexander Gilkes, for cocktails, dinner, and a view of the artist’s sculptures. So, has Nonoo been to Red Hook’s other major destination, aka Ikea? “I have! During Sandy my apartment was out of commission and we moved in with friends in Williamsburg. We had nothing to do one day, so I went. It was very fun, but I don’t think I bought anything. Maybe some cooking utensils…”
