Jeff Koons Mania At H&M’s New Fifth Ave. Store

by Alexandra Ilyashov

H&M’s latest collab, with artist Jeff Koons, deserves a fair amount of fanfare, no? Last eve’s grand opening of the largest H&M in the world proved to be the perfect way to celebrate the Koons collection.  As the rain continued to pour outside, the tapis rouge moved indoors, where the festivities continued, replete with cocktails, vino, apps, and special discounts. Though these chic perks were not enough to lift the precipitation, they certainly lifted spirits….

Koons hosted the bash along with The Whitney’s Adam Weinberg and Scott Rothkopf—the museum is currently showing Jeff Koons: A Retrospective until October 19th. On the celeb front, Olivia Wilde and Ashley Benson were there, along with the likes of Julie Henderson, Simon Doonan, Maria Cornejo, Athena Calderone, and Alek Wek, and Brit singer Birdy performed.

As for the new H&M digs, located at 589 5th Avenue, the space clocks in at 57,000 square feet, and it’ll open tomorrow at noon. Bells and whistles include the retailer’s debut full concierge shopping service; it’ll also be the first NYC location to carry the full H&M Home collection.

“Our goal is to bring fashion and art to the people,” said Daniel Kulle, H&M’s North America continental manager. “For us it’s very important make high level [pieces] widely available—it’s possible to buy a [Jeff Koons] bag here today for only $49.95.”

Expect that limited-edition black leather carryall, splashed with Koons’ famous Balloon Dog work, to sell out ASAP. After all, last night’s shoppers were grabbing them by the handful. Koons-crazy, indeed!

Jeff reminds me of Andy in many ways.
They are both superb marketeers!
