Hamptons Shop Talk: Tamara Comolli, Gail Rothwell, And Orlebar Brown
While the initial draw of the Hamptons might be picturesque beaches and pristine summer homes, the East End has undoubtedly become a go-to shopping destination. With world-class boutiques situated next to Mom-and-Pop retailers, you could easily spend an entire weekend perusing Main Street in East Hampton or Jobs Lane in Southampton and beyond. So The Daily Summer went to town chatting with the keepers of the gates, aka the sales girls and boys, to see what’s happening on the shopping front. Can you blame us for snagging a few summer must-haves on the way?
Alec Floyd, VP at Tamara Comolli
Which Tamara Comolli piece do you wear often?
Because the collection is 99.9 percent for women, there aren’t too many pieces for men. But we do have a few leather bracelets and pendants. However, I have a ring that’s been in our collection for over 20 years. It has champagne diamonds with a solid band on a tracking system. It also comes in white diamonds and sapphires. I wear it all the time!
Does Tamara ever stop by the shop?
She will be in the boutique in August. She comes in every year, for the month, and is very hands on. There isn’t really anything that she wouldn’t do around here!
Is she usually decked out in her own bauble designs?
Not a lot! Tamara is a very beautiful woman who’s very natural. When she wears jewelry, it’s as if it was an extension of her personality.
Where do you take your lunch breaks around here?
Lately, I’ve been going to Citarella. I’m so happy it opened out here because it’s so convenient! They have a great selection.

Gail Rothwell, Owner of Gail Rothwell
What have you stocked up on for the season, so far?
White shirts, black shirts, and some knit tops from The Row. That’s it!
What’s the piece du moment?
The item for the season has been capris in all different colors and embroideries, but the white sleeveless shirt has been doing well too.
Which of the designers that you carry have stopped in to peruse the store?
A couple of them: Gilles Mendel of J. Mendel and Jason Wu have been in.
What’s your fave rainy day activity, when you’re not at the store?
Kicking back and reading a book. Right now I’m reading a French book, that was translated into English.
Gail Rothwell, 66 Newtown Ln., East Hampton
Jenny Gueroult, at Orlebar Brown
What’s going on at Orlebar Brown this summer?
This is our first store in the US, because we’re an English brand, and we opened just here weeks ago!
So where can we find you when you’re not working?
I’m a big surfer, so you can find me at Ditch Plains in Montauk. Probably in an Orlebar Brown bikini!
Are you from East Hampton?
Non, I’m from St. Barths. I’m here for six months and down there for six months. It’s funny because it’s the same crowd here in the summer that there is during the festive period in St. Barths.
For the hommes, which length is the best-seller of the season?
The bulldog length tends to sell the best. They’re our mid-length style, but we also offer everything from briefs to super short-shorts to full length swim trunks.
