Perhaps you’ve seen the images by now, splashed across Instagram and Twitter, of Giambattista Valli‘s finale of ruffled couture gowns in tropical hues, topped off with round shades and a chic white turban-esque topper. An overdose of Old Hollywood glamour? Anything but. The collection was a refresher course on what couture should be: a smattering of simple, well-articulated dresses alongside intricately embroidered gowns, accessorized with touches of lilac fur, and just a sprinkle of black sequins. Valli was even able to put a couture spin on stripes, turning a basic shirtdress into a voluminous gown with a gathered skirt.
But back to that floral business: these blooms weren’t your run-of-the-mill fauna. Valli replicated a whole bouquet of flowers, and then some, like a sprinkle of daisies and pansies on a lace gown, roses and hydrangeas encircling a tea-length dress, and wreaths of lilacs dripping down a white peplum jacket.
