It’s more than just the November cover—ELLE traveled to the Beverly Hills’ Four Seasons last night for its Women in Hollywood Awards, and they were joined by some of the industry’s most influential to honor the cover stars for all their successes: Dakota Johnson, Kate Winslet, Ava DuVernay, Amy Schumer, Salma Hayek, Carey Mulligan, Gena Rowlands, and Alicia Vikander. Joining most of the honorees were ELLE’s EIC Robbie Myers, Zoe Saldana, Shailene Woodley, Zoe Kravitz, Nina Dobrev, Ashley Madekwe, Miranda Kerr, and Calvin Klein Collection’s womenswear creative director Francisco Costa. Calvin Klein Collection served as presenting sponsor and Johnson received the ‘Calvin Klein Emerging Star Spotlight Award,’ presented to her by Leslie Mann.
In case anyone was unclear why the awards are as important as ever even after 22 years, ELLE’s EIC Robbie Myers gave the audience a strong reminder: “Women make up only 20 percent of Congress. Senior movie studio execs are 93 percent male, and only 4 percent of studio films are directed by women… [and] as long as the President of the United States, the VP, the Speaker of the House, the President Pro Tem, the Secretaries of State, of the Treasury, of Defense are all men; you have to go seven layers down to find a woman, Attorney General Loretta Lynch, on the succession plan…We need as many ‘Women In’ gatherings that we can dream up.” Well said.
