Elie Saab Couture Fall 2014

by Alexandra Ilyashov

If anyone can do Couture with aplomb, with an uberloyal clientele of fangirls, and with no elaborate detail spared, it’s Elie Saab. His Couture getups for Fall were par for the unapologetically ornate course, rife with both buttery pastel hues (a couple of pinky shades; plenty of blue, from cornflower to a rich midnight navy) and neutrals so tricked out in embellishment, it’s not really fair to call a noir, grey, or white frock neutral in Saab’s hands. A profusion of pearls proved to be the detail de rigueur this season, and the results were luxuriant but certainly not prissy. See: look deux, an ombre, flared minidress with a deep neckline balanced by long sleeves, completely coated in a mishmash of pearls and meticulous beading. Silhouettes spanned the gamut; those above-the-knee numbers were interspersed between ethereal floating floor-length looks in sheer chiffon layerings, trumpet hems, and billowing, stiffly-skirted, positively regal pieces bedecked in beading. Deliciously outsized monochromatic fur stoles were slung over the shoulders on a couple of looks. All in all? Sublimely Saab, in the best way possible.
