Chic Theatre: 'After Midnight' Sparkles

by The Daily Front Row

Looking for a little Broadway before front row time resumes again in February? Swarovski recently invited us to check out a performance of the new musical, After Midnight, and the show was all that jazz. The show takes place at a Harlem jazz club in the Twenties, featuring songs written by a few fellas who you’ve likely heard of before named Duke Ellington, Harold Arlen, and Cab Calloway. A few of the tunes were sung by Fantasia Barrino, who turns out a powerhouse vocal performance.   The show enlisted fashion designer Isabel Toledo to create knock-your-socks-off costumes to bring us swinging back to an era where what you wore wasn’t a second thought. Where did Toledo go to find over 120,000 crystal beads, pearls, and pendants to recreate the jazz age? Swarovski, of course, who’s now a longtime friend of The Great White Way. The brand’s dazzling creations have appeared in productions such as Priscilla Queen of the Desert and Motown: The Musical. Fantasia remains in the show through February 9th before k.d. lang steps in for a month and Babyface and Toni Braxton join for a few weeks in March. Tap those toes to the Brooks Atkinson theatre before midnight.
