Baja East Fall/Winter 2016

by Ashley Baker

There is more than a touch of l’esprit Belge running through the hearts and minds of New York’s emerging designers. Baja East has moved beyond the cashmere ponchos and unisexy knits to separates and eveningwear with panache. A hummingbird print dressed up pajama-esque suiting and a shoulder-baring dress, while a velvet froor-grazer lent a louche sensibility to a look that could otherwise be described as merely groovy. That relaxed sensibility is here to stay, even in a graphic Lurex evening gown that is likely to end up at an Oscars after-party in a couple of weeks. (Smart starlets will work the full look, including the slides and sneakers created as part of a collaboration with Fila.) For those of us who aren’t destined for the limelight, sumptuous cable-knits and easy, printed culottes will do just fine.
