Another surprise move is rocking the media world this fine Thursday: Amy Astley, the longtime editor of Teen Vogue and a protegé of Anna Wintour, has been named editor-in-chief of Architectural Digest. Margaret Russell, AD’s highly respected EIC who joined the title in 2010 after a very successful tenure at Elle Décor, will transition to a consulting role with Condé Nast.

According to a statement from Condé Nast, Astley will focus her attentions on “reimagining and significantly expanding the brand’s digital presence across all platforms and formats, and furthering the reach of Architectural Digest’s design authority.” Wintour’s take, according to a statement: “Amy’s leadership and creativity can be seen in the success of Teen Vogue, which she has built into the influential source of emerging fashion, beauty and culture for young women everywhere. Amy also has spent a great deal of her career immersed in art and design, including five years at House & Garden where she also served as the de facto personal interior stylist for Alexander Liberman, which has given her a deep knowledge and lifelong passion for design that will lift Architectural Digest to new heights.”

Meanwhile at Teen Vogue, former beauty and health director Elaine Welteroth has been promoted to editor. She will jointly oversee the title along with creative director Marie Suter and digital editorial director Phillip Picardi.
