Prepare your preppy! J.Crew and Lacoste have partnered for the first time on an exclusive line of polo shirts coming your way this spring. Over 30 J.Crew U.S. stores and online (as well as in Canada, the U.K., and France) will be carrying the line which will be available in white, navy, burgundy, and orange and retail from $55 to $98. To make the news even sweeter, the collab will be available for women, men, and even in their Crewcut line for kids and babies. Jenna Lyons and head of men’s design Frank Muytjens have chosen Lacoste to be part of their “Looks We Love” seasonal section. “I remember saving my babysitting money to buy my first Lacoste,” Lyons recalls. “Although the brand started off as this very sporty, tennis-world thing, it went on to have a big influence beyond that…and I’m pretty sure it was name-checked in a Biggie Smalls song.” Quick history lesson: French tennis player René Lacoste was the creator of the tennis shirt in 1929. He was nicknamed “The Crocodile” for supposedly making a bet with his team captain about whether he would win a certain match. The stakes were a suitcase he had seen in a Boston store; it was made of crocodile (or alligator) skin. Later, Lacoste’s friend Robert George embroidered a crocodile onto a blazer that Lacoste wore for his matches. That worked out pretty well…
